The Meaning of Waqf

A waqf is a permanent charitable endowment established for the sake of Allah (SWT). Traditionally, a person donates an asset—such as land, property, or money—which is preserved indefinitely. Rather than spending the capital itself, the income generated from the asset is used to support charitable causes.

This ensures that the original donation continues to benefit society generation after generation.

Step 4 — Stewardship by the Mutawallis

The waqf is administered by the Mutawallis (Trustees).

The trustees are responsible for:

  • protecting the waqf capital,
  • ensuring compliance with the Trust Deed,
  • maintaining transparency,
  • exercising sound governance,
  • investing prudently,
  • safeguarding the interests of beneficiaries,
  • ensuring Shariah compliance.

Their responsibility is one of trust (amānah) and accountability before both society and Allah (SWT).

Rather than allowing the donated capital to remain idle, the trustees invest it in rigorously screened Shariah-compliant investments.
